I find myself on a journey to herd a group of cows, with the goal of physically reaching them. The duration of this search coincides with the time it takes for a newborn calf to stand up and seek out its mother’s udder to feed. Two of them have run away very, very far. I have driven them to a desperation for space, an irreversible fear of those who own them.

Fom the same parents, I wished for you to never play alone again. With every jump, the fear of you growing up comes along. My greatest wish is just a time-travel tunnel away. As I cross the tunnel by plane, a pause in the development of the person I left behind begins. In truth, watching you jump only makes me afraid of seeing you fall.

A skirt without a body can be so light but when worn, it depends on numbers to meet the standards of those who aren’t wearing it. Women weren’t allowed to wear pants, nor could they show their knees when wearing a skirt; if they did, they were considered indecent. Before classes began, skirts were measured and couldn’t be shorter than three fingers below the knee.  This indecency is transformed into a new piece. I delimit the unclaimed land with the new size of the hems of decency.

Amid the repetitive routine of breeding, eating, and defecating, a break from this routine occurs, transforming their usual space into one where observation is the primary activity. Adaptation to this constant routine makes any interference frightening. In an attempt to communicate with those who repeat the same meal until they die, we realize just how close they are to us. The sound attached to this grueling routine deafens those who observe it, but it is silence for those who are part of it. If they do not know freedom, do they need it?

Nota curatorial/Curator's note
A pause, a waiting room, an interrupted path, one, or three, (off)beats of interlude. Drawing on imagery anchored in the Azorean pasture landscape, Sara Massa explores an intimate, yet resistant relationship with island isolation, displacement, and powerlessness. Between the beat, which marks and sustains time, and the offbeat, which interrupts, destabilizes and diverts it, the collection of six videos presented in the exhibition And wait, and wait, and wait, at the Project Room • Guest Young Artist, proposes a condition that is simultaneously of waiting and of provocation.

The island experience does not emerge merely as a geographical context, but as a temporal condition. Isolation and distance produce a time perception where waiting ceases to be an exception and becomes a way of inhabiting everyday life. It is within this particular rhythm that the actions proposed by Sara Massa intersect with unavoidable forces such as isolation, distance, growth, and social conventions. Between the desire to act, the limits of action, the videos reveal situations in which experience is shaped by the impossibility of fully intervening. This dimension echoes the reflections of Camus (Le mythe de Sisyphe, 1942), for whom the absurd arises from the conflict between humanity's need to attribute meaning and the indifference of the world. Similarly to Sisyphos(1), condemned to an endless task, the figures that inhabit these works prolong performative actions, shifting attention from outcome to duration. These ideas are particularly relevant in the works “Waiting for war to end”, in which waiting becomes suspended observation in the face of ongoing conflict, “Proibido tocar na vaca”, which addresses proximity and non-intervention, and “Do not disturb”, a video in which repetition structures everyday life and where observation replaces action. Between apparently simple and prolonged movements, the works oscillate between the attempt to inhabit a center and the experience of emptiness. Departing from a traditional narrative logic, and reinforced by the absence of language, privilege is given to the experience grounded on the duration of the gesture itself. It is within this relation that the suspension of time becomes a way of observing, inhabiting, and challenging the established order.

More than shared narratives or themes, these works showcase subtle forms of resistance, conformity and misalignment. Each video establishes itself as an autonomous unit, yet extends itself through dialogue with the others, permeating the exhibition space through different performative actions. Visitors are invited to pause, to sit, to lie down, and to move through this body of work at their own pace.

This piece was inspired by a false promise of a special appearance by a cow from the Azores in Lisbon, made on social media and directed to who would listen and believe. I apologize for promising you someone who isn’t here. I really wanted to bring Espiríta to Lisbon. I believe she might have been held up at the airport for carrying too many liquids, or that the plane might not have been able to take off because of the fog. At least she tried everything, but circumstances prevented her. I’d only known her for a short time; she was the first and only one who let me touch her fur and pet her. My father couldn’t be here either; he has to feed them everyday. Maybe Espiríta couldn’t be here because she also has to feed someone. The parasite feeds on those who feed others.
I’m sorry, I’m a parasite.
I’m sorry you couldn’t be here.

The disgrace of a house where dung is normalized because it’s part of daily life, because it has to be and because it is. Shame at the stench that surrounds the house clinging to the pasture, shame at the union between the pasture and the house. If, by isolating myself from this garden of brambles, I manage to be and to see, I will not be the most sincere. I hopped over the pile of fallen black volcanic rocks and kept walking and praying, searching for the secret. The secret is a vacant lot with a broken gate, no one mows its grass. I can hold a wedding there or I can lead a procession that never sees the church door.

A ruminant animal standing motionless before an object that resembles  grass or fire, or grass on fire, both rising from the bottom up. Uncertain whether it is a calf or an adult, but certainly female (by association with the udder), she ruminates even the most unfamiliar grass coming from the deepest hole or the highest hill. The unknown becomes future fertilizer for those who live off the same soil. With cattle-raising as a tradition in the generations before me, the future fertilizer of this lineage will be broken by me; yet I end this pattern by tending to my cows, imagining them here with me.

Continuavam a marcar território?
EN
Territory occupies space on the ground, the ground occupies space, the droppings occupy a space that dissolves—and if they don’t dissolve? Would they turn into floating droppings? Would they continue to mark territory? Would they still serve as camouflage to avoid becoming prey? And would they signal the search for a mate? And the scent to find the way back? In other territories far, far away, they are sacred matter and cover the houses, maintaining their healing properties and warding off all evils. But since they are so far from us, they would more easily be found on red carpets than in our homes.
Nine “island neighborhoods” made of cyclical ruminations, nine types of digestion. A game of musical chairs without chairs on purchased land where no one wins or loses because we are all waiting for it to blend into the soil, becoming food once again. The initial position of the piece “Ocupa” is so ephemeral that it is lost in the time and space it occupies.

A exposição SORRY, I CAN’T BE THERE, é um lamento com dois versos.

EN  “And if nothing can be done to restrain, or at least modify, our monstrous worship for facts, Art will become sterile and beauty will disappear from Earth.”
Wilde, Oscar (2023), “O Declínio da Mentira”, Lisboa: Nova Vega, p.23

A fly landed on my book and I closed it suddenly by instinct. An instinct that we are actually taught, that bugs are meant to be killed. I immediately regretted my action and slowly opened to the murderous page, understanding that I had just changed the entire book. The story is now different, the narrative has become heavier and suddenly I’ve become a writer. I’ve put a period here. So I’ll keep on writing, putting intention into death and creation, like a good farmer:

A meteor has fallen here. There’s a giant hole in the middle of the room and everything burns around a fluorescent stone. There are whispers, the shock shakes the space and in a sudden silence a moo is heard. From within the stone emerges a spotted, imposing creature with a wise posture. It talks and speaks Portuguese, even with a slight accent, I would say. It shares stories of distant galaxies and how the lack of pasture in the vacuum made it develop an interest in language. It learned to read through Plato, the only book on the meteor, and it now wants to know who we are and if we have any plains nearby. The most experienced farmer takes it to the green, and as soon as its first leg touches the grass, the cow ceases all speech. It just grazes, looks disinterestedly around, and grazes again. In the room of the impact, there’s an intense odor of manure, and little by little the big stone disintegrates, merging with the floor and walls, fertilizing thoughts.

This exhibition opens with an apology. The artist promised on her social media the presence of the cow Espiríta, but unfortunately, she will not be present. However, if she had actually come to meet you all, the story would have completed itself. When expectations are met, imagination loses its power. Please be free to detach from facts and to see lying as truth and vice versa. Home is a strange place, as well as familiar. The exhibition SORRY, I CAN’T BE THERE, is an apology with two sides. On the one hand, the affirmation that something is missing in this space, it’s an incomplete exhibition, lacking the essence of what originated it; on the other, a regret for its presence here and not elsewhere, another place or person whom it may have called comfort. It’s difficult to pinpoint the moment when we realize that what we once considered our world is nothing but a small part of the start of our lives. This exhibition is a thank-you letter to the place we have called home since birth, to growth, to mothers and fathers of all species, to leaving the nest, in this case, leaving the pasture.

Growing up in the countryside teaches us that everything that’s created will eventually disappear, vanishing in the world and in memory, to become something else. However, beyond the ephemeral, the landscape is perpetual. Creation sprouts from an eternal cycle of inspiration and reuse. An object found in the trash can easily become a work of art, just as a work of art can easily become trash. Everything here is written on toilet paper, disposable, aligning itself with the most irregular aspects of everyday simplicity. Unique narratives are created through the reinterpretation of mundane objects to which we attribute values of disgust or disdain. Shit is normalized, life is celebrated. The cow emerges as a metamorphic character, a symbol of affection and social justice. Its presence is noticed, but far from threatening. The flies that follow it help us fall asleep, so that we can daydream and be at peace with the fact that THERE’S A COW IN THE MIDDLE OF THE ROOM AND NO ONE’S DOING ANYTHING!

Nota curatorial/Curator's note
Circular, assimilar e interiorizar.

EN Each individual’s gut flora is a unique and delicate system of microorganisms responsible for digestion. Sara Massa’s first solo exhibition, SORRY, I CAN’T BE THERE presents itself as a simulation of this very system, where the visitor is consumed, digested, and excreted through the exhibition space itself. This exhibition is also constituted by the unique microbiome of Sara Massa’s imagination. Cows, pastures, and excrement are some of the elements that allow the artist to digest the urban experience of an island cow. By bringing a mix of irony, existentialism, taboo, and a generous dose of humor, this exhibition reflects on the digestive existence that is fundamentally singular and shared. To circulate, assimilate, and internalize.
